Oldair’s Story: Extra Sense of Security

January 22, 2021

Oldair

When Oldair purchased Limited Benefit Critical Illness Insurance, it was at the recommendation of a friend. Although Oldair—an Administrative Assistant for his school district—didn’t expect to need the policy, he appreciated the sense of security it provided.

But several years after purchasing the policy, Oldair’s life took an unexpected turn.

Facing the Unexpected

In August of 2018, Oldair arrived at work and greeted his co-workers before going to the kitchen to chop vegetables for lunch. That’s when he knew something was wrong.

“All of a sudden, I got really dizzy,” Oldair said. “The entire room was spinning, and I could not control it.”

Luckily, a co-worker was nearby and helped Oldair safely sit down. Within minutes, Oldair was surrounded by co-workers and paramedics.

“I truly am grateful for having such caring co-workers act quickly,” he said.

When Oldair arrived at the hospital, he was diagnosed with a cerebral stroke due to high blood pressure.

An Enrollment Surprise

Following his diagnosis, Oldair faced a hard recovery. He had to learn to walk, talk, and chew all over again. And with so much to overcome, Oldair didn’t think about the benefits his critical illness insurance policy may have provided.

When he returned to work months later, Oldair sat down with his American Fidelity account representative for open enrollment and discovered the policy was still active.

“I was so surprised and delighted about this coverage,” Oldair said. “The one-time payment made things a whole lot easier during the holidays.”

Moving Forward

As a result of his unexpected diagnosis, Oldair encourages his fellow school employees to consider purchasing critical illness insurance, too.

“Get that coverage for the extra sense of security,” Oldair said.

“We don’t know what may happen to us nowadays. Considering that any one of us may fall victim to a critical illness not normally covered, it would be wise to get that extra piece of mind.”

Truly Blessed

Two years later, Oldair is back at work and still recuperating from the cerebral stroke. He remains grateful for everyone who played a part in his recovery.

“I am truly blessed to have such a great support group in my family and friends to get me through this time,” Oldair said.

“I am truly appreciative of the tireless people who assist people in my situation. Paramedics, hospital workers, therapy workers, housekeeping … thank you to all of you.”

American Fidelity is honored to be part of Oldair’s journey.
