Alex’s Story: A Journey of Support
Alex has been teaching in Kentucky for 15 years. She currently teaches fourth grade and feels the relationship with her students is the best part of her job. In her free time, she loves reading and traveling, especially to beaches. However, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she felt vacations would be put on hold. With her Limited Benefit Cancer Insurance coverage, not only were her medical bills covered, but they were able to save up for a vacation.
Building Trust One-on-One
Alex meets every year with her American Fidelity representative for her benefits enrollment. Year after year, she added different coverages as they fit into her budget. Alex said,
“I think it's important to meet with your representative. Once you meet with that person the first time and you feel the reassurance in what they're saying. Then after you file a claim and see that they really are going to pay out like they say they are. To me, that built the trust.”
A Sense of Normalcy
Alex was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer at the age of 30, not even six months after signing up for a cancer policy. After her diagnosis, Alex was thrust into a two-year whirlwind of surgeries and chemotherapy treatments. “Treatment was a little tough, and there was a lot going on, but I wasn’t concerned when I got a bill. I had money coming in from American Fidelity,” Alex said.
“Pretty much 90% of my bills were paid for through American Fidelity.”
She and her family were able to live as normal as possible without the added pressure of medical bills piling up.
With her surgeries and weekly treatments, Alex was having to file a lot of claims all at once and it was a bit overwhelming. “I called the customer service line and everybody that I've talked to has been so helpful. They will tell me exactly what they need, what to find, and how to contact them,” Alex said. After that, she was able to get into a pattern and did everything through the AFmobile® app. “I actually did it while I was sitting in the chemo chair. I could just take a photo from my phone and upload it right onto the app. Super easy.”
Empowering Advocacy
Alex loves being an advocate at her school. She always invites her colleagues to come visit with her if they have any questions and to show them her experience with her claims. She said, “I think people that are resistant need to know that it's super easy and absolutely worth it. Hopefully you never have to use it, but if you do, that's one less thing you need to worry about while you're going through something super difficult.”
