A Partnership that Helps Power Union Growth
Video Transcript:
Pia Morrison: This is a particularly tough time for workers, so we have to meet our members where they are no matter what that looks like. In person, virtually, going to their work site and meeting with them when they need us.
Travis Simon: We have 600 different job classifications. So it's just making sure that we have staff and union leaders that can speak to their issues that, you know, connect with them, that impact them and their families.
Dr. Donna Christy: We hire like a thousand people that get on board at the beginning of the year and being able to touch base with all those people is really difficult. Other smaller organizations didn't have the capacity to serve a membership our size. American Fidelity, they hit every building, every year. They're achieving things that would be impossible for us to do.
Elaine Kuhar: American Fidelity does put a lot of manpower investment into making sure that every school has an American Fidelity rep there. We've always worked very collaboratively. Everybody that I've met who works for American Fidelity has just been wonderful and supportive.
Travis Simon: We sit down with the team. We talk about, alright, these are the work sites that would be really good targets for you all to focus on in terms of where we need membership growth for the union, but also where American Fidelity has folks that aren't signed up for their services. It's been really positive, this partnership, over the years.
Pia Morrison: I know for a fact that American Fidelity creates an experience for our members that is rooted in professionalism and really rooted in care, and they have taken a lot of time to really understand our members and understand what our members' schedules are like and how and when to be in specific places so that they can have the maximum impact.
Elaine Kuhar: When it's a joint effort, we are able to be more productive signing people up. That really does allow us to focus on helping them organize in their work sites or getting them involved in different union wide campaigns, recruitment of leaders and building reps. Every time I work with American Fidelity, it just brings me a lot of joy.
Travis Simon: The partnership, I think, is going to increase because we're not going to be able to achieve the membership density that we're going to need if we don't have partners like American Fidelity that can help us get out there and speak to all those workers and get them signed up on the union.
Dr. Donna Christy: It makes my job easier as president knowing that that resource is there, knowing that if you can pick up the phone and ask those questions or get that support. I don't think I would have enjoyed being president so much if I didn't have that. You're either part of the problem or you're part of a solution, and for us, I can sit well with myself as president knowing that that solution is available, and I haven't been a part of that problem.
Pia Morrison: They're very focused on helping us to build a strong, more powerful union, which helps us both politically and at the bargaining table. I have never had a bad experience with American Fidelity.
Dr. Donna Christy: We have a great partnership with a company that's going to serve our members well, and that makes me confident in my leadership and knowing that our members are going to be protected.
