Chasity's Story: Journey to Resilience
Video Transcript:
I was teaching school, and I remember exactly where I was at. I was in the library. I was just standing there and I had a sharp pain come through my chest right here and out my back. And when I took a deep breath, I just couldn't, it just kept getting worse and worse and worse.
And so I went to my primary care doctor, and she could have easily said it was a pulled muscle, but she said, "Let's just get a CT scan just to make sure nothing's going on." I went and got the CT scan. They came out and said, "It looks like you have pneumonia." Put me on an antibiotic. I go back to work that Monday, and she calls me and says, "Can you come in?" We were just sitting down, kind of like this, and she handed me a box of tissues. She said, "There's no easy way to tell this but the radiologist and other doctors really think you have lung cancer." The only thing I could think of was my kids. You know, I didn't smoke. How's this possible? And long story short, got a bronchoscopy, and I had stage four lung cancer at the age of 40, getting ready to turn 41, October 9, 2018.
From very early on, Katie Mathis was there from day one. She was our supplemental insurance. And, you know, she advised me what I need to do, and I totally trusted her. And I can't tell you how blessed I am for taking out the cancer policy. Something like this gives you a peace of mind. And when you have a team that you trust and they're saying, you know, "I'd do this for my family," then yeah, I'm gonna do that and protect myself and my family. I mean, I can honestly tell you through American Fidelity and my Anthem that's covered, I have not been out of any money, none. And I've been fighting cancer going on four years.
They sent me a $10,000 check right off the bat. If it wasn't for that, you know, those first hospital bills and all that would have really added up. But that check also helped me go get second opinions. And I don't know where I'd be without it. Financially, mentally, too. Just worrying about how am I gonna pay for $15,000 bottle of pills or how am I going to pay for this chemo treatment?
When you're fighting a battle like that, you don't wanna have to sit and worry about insurance. And she took that off my plate. American Fidelity took it off my plate, and I'll forever be grateful for her and American Fidelity.
