American Fidelity Earns National Honor
AFA Recognized as a ‘Best Company to Work For’ by FORTUNE
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – American Fidelity Assurance Company (AFA) was named today to FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for the ninth consecutive year. AFA is ranked No. 47 on this year’s list. The full list and related stories appear in the Feb. 6 issue of FORTUNE, or now available at www.fortune.com/bestcompanies.
“I consider it a privilege to be part of the AFA family. While culture is not the only factor guaranteeing our success, it clearly plays an unparalleled role,” said Jeanette Rice, senior vice president of corporate and human resources. “I know I’m not alone when I say it is truly an honor to be part of a workplace that not only makes a difference in our Colleagues lives, but in the lives of our Customers and our community.”
Providing a great environment for our Colleagues while offering exceptional service to our Customers has been a priority for AFA for over 50 years. FORTUNE magazine and the Great Place to Work Institute first recognized American Fidelity Assurance Company in 2004, making it the first Oklahoma City business to receive this recognition.
As Colleagues arrived at work this morning, they were greeted by executives thanking them for their hard work and giving them a list of the day’s activities. Later, all Colleagues were invited to enjoy a retro TV dinner style lunch to tie in to this year’s theme of catching the AF Vision. Finally, Company leaders delivered goody boxes featuring treats, a thank you note and a chance to win a prize to all Colleagues.
In honor of making the FORTUNE list, Colleagues also will be given an extra paid day off work to use in 2012.
FORTUNE magazine highlighted American Fidelity’s Colleagues average tenure, annual holiday bonus and incentive packages and defined-benefit pension plan.
“Nearly half this insurer's workforce is over age 45, and 18% have been here more than 20 years. All employees get an annual holiday bonus or incentive package, plus a defined-benefit pension plan.”
To pick the 100 Best Companies, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Two-thirds of a Company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each Company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about the management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third of the scoring is based on the Company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring, communication and diversity. This year 280 companies were evaluated during the process.
Oklahoma’s top elected officials also appreciate American Fidelity’s commitment to the community workforce.
“One of the keys to ongoing economic development in Oklahoma is the strength of the companies that are headquartered here,” said Gov. Mary Fallin. “Oklahoma is fortunate to have FORTUNE magazine recognize American Fidelity Assurance Company for nine consecutive years as one of their 100 Best Companies to Work For in America. They help shine a national spotlight on our great state and the health of our business climate.”
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett also lauded the Company for its contributions to the city.
“As Oklahoma City continues to grow and bring in new companies, it’s wonderful to be able to show examples of companies with a long, successful history in the city,” said Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett. “We are proud of American Fidelity Assurance Company and that they help bring positive national attention to the Oklahoma City business community. The acknowledgement from FORTUNE magazine demonstrates the strength of our employer base and that our local businesses contribute to the family-focused environment of OKC.”
AFA is one of the largest employers in Oklahoma City with about 1,500 employees. More than 1,000 Colleagues work in Oklahoma City, while the rest are spread among 26 locations across the United States.
